Ruth wants a happy, comfortable life.... confortable being the operative. Happiness is the most important thing to Ruth. A good home, a loving marriage, two people working toward what's best for their children.
Beneatha doesn't have much interest in marriage. She wants to have a career, she wants to work, and she wants to take whatever opportunities she is afforded. This is why George is such an attractive prospect for everyone else, and exactly why Beneatha isn't all that interested. She doesn't want to be the woman on Geroge's arm.... she wants to be a woman in her own right.
