Traditionally or more appropriately historically, Mama might have backed down in the face of a white man implying her family would not be welcome in a specific neighborhood. She was traised in a different era, and Lindner likely believed that she would be more likely to accept his offer based upon that fact. Mama certainly proved him assumption to be wrong.
