A Raisin in the Sun

Review pages 84-85. Of the three female characters – Beneatha, Mama, and Ruth – which seems to be the strongest? Why do you feel this way? What do you think Hansberry is trying to get the reader to understand? Act 3

Of the three women, it is my opinion that Ruth is the strongest in Act III. Mama is strong.... there is no doubt about that, but her children and circumstances are wearing her down. Beneatha is educated but seems unwilling to fight for the family, her intent often seems to be selfish, much like Walter's. Ruth, however, is fighting for the future.... for her son.... for his future. She is the one woman in the play who is consistently unwilling to stand down and accept what people expect..... she stands up and fights for tomorrow.
