Ruth and Walter seem to have a very normal relationship for a couple that has been married multiple years. The children (in this case Travis) take precedent, money worries abound, and there are the little details which become annoying. Smoking in the morning, financial discussions, evenings out with friends..... all of these things are often insignificant when people are first married. Later though, worries can blow these things out of proportion, and other worries compound the small things into arguments that are caused by things that have nothing to do with the real worry.
