Civilization equals inequality amongst classes. This doesn't mean inequality among people, but rather conception of what your class "say about you." Lucy faces snobbery and is forced to make decisions based on convention rather than personal desire. Her predicament is one that has faced many throughout history.

Travel enables Lucy to expand her horizons and find herself as a person. She has always conformed, but her travels allow her to kick up her heels and experience freedom from the conformity she's always embraced. The title "A Room With a View," doesn't symbolize the place or the view from a balcony; it symbolizes "life with a view," the concept of REALLY living.
