A Separate Peace.

. Finny tells Gene he would be so jealous, if Gene became head of their class, that he’d kill himself out of envy. Gene believes Finny is telling the truth, that Finny’s joking manner is a screen. What other reaction could Gene have had? Why do you think he chose to react in this manner?

Gene didn't know how to respond to his friend's teasing and took everything Finny said far too seriously. It would have helped if he could find the humor in Finny's words.
