Brinker Hadley can be a pretty cruel guy. He likes to set up situations of conflict that will bring emotional pain. In Chapter 7, Brinker Hadley decides to pay Gene a visit, and immediately starts accusing Gene of arranging Finny's accident in order to get a room to himself. This is Brinker's style of manipulation creating conflict.
