Do you think Phineas believed his own story that jumping from the tree related to an individual's preparation for war?

I don't think he really did consider his motivations clearly. Finny is just a boy. Romantic notions equating jumping off trees and war are simply boyhood rituals to derive a greater meaning to the daring deeds that they do.
