I can give you a general answer. Gene has his own issues to work out. Gene doesn't understand Leper's angst about war. Gene has only a vague idea of what war might be like. Leper also verbally attacks Gene over the tree incident, which cause Gene to lose any sympathy for Leper at the moment.
