The chapter opens with Gene declaring, "Peace had deserted Devon." In what ways has peace left the school?

There are a variety of ways in which peace has left the school. The mood has become more serious with the summer session ending (a laid back time), and the beginning of the 'real' school year (time to hit the books). We also have the afteraffects of Finny's fall.
