Basically to have personality at Devon, one had to break the rules and have everybody love you for it. Of course Gene looks at Finny as the ultimate in personality. Where other boys got in trouble, Finny was praised by staff and students. Devon was a place of rigid conformity. To have "personality" one had to break the rules with flair yet seem endearing at the same time. Check out Gene's quote,
"You had to be rude at least sometimes and edgy often to be credited with 'personality,' and without that accolade no one at Devon could be anyone. No one, with the exception of course of Phineas."
Finny would be late for meals, ask for homework extensions, play silly pranks...
"The Devon faculty had never before experienced a student who combined a calm ignorance of the rules with a winning urge to be good, who seemed to love the school truly and deeply, and never more than when he was breaking the regulations …. The faculty threw up its hands over Phineas, and so loosened its grip on all of us "
