Gene realizes that Finney knew all along. Finny asks Gene if it was an impulse to shake the tree branch or if there was some deep hatred that Gene had against him. Gene says it was not hatred and just silly rivalry. Gene, however, senses that Finny always knew the truth, perhaps better than Gene knew it himself.
