Placed in a different setting as in where it takes place or the years during which it takes place.

England was in the middle of a war. If you change the location, the boys at the school wouldn't be facing the atrocities of war. The same issue would be prevalent if you changed the time period..... the story would have a plot. If you changed both, you'd have to go with a different war altogether. WWI, Vietnam, the Middle East....... but again, the entire plot would be different.
