Why did the school masters exhibit unusual tolerance during the summer session?

During the summer session, the school masters weren't on the twenty-four hour alert of being aware of all of the boys' actions. The boys were allowed more freedom, the masters relaxed a bit, and suspicion of any and all activity was put on hold.
