Why do u think Finny needed to create the illusion the war didn't exist?

Finny could never be a part of war. His good nature and subsequent injury put him at odds with the concept and physicality of war. War would also separate him from Gene. Their relationship would change. These boys were so co dependent on each other that any separation was a point of great stress and anguish.
