Finny thinks that war is an “illusion” meant to deprive young men of their lives for older men's gain. Finny doesn’t want Gene to go to war because his identity is wrapped up in Gene. If Gene joins his other friends, Finny feels his identity will be torn apart. Ironically his reasoning not to join the war isn't all together wrong, but his motivations for saying it are completely self-serving.
