Why had Leper "escaped" from the army?

Leeper claims that he had "escaped" the army before the army could give him a section eight, a dismissal for mentally unstaible or "crazy" people. Leeper may not have been crazy, I think that he felt that he would not last in such an environment. The romantic notions he had of the army were nothing like the realities.
