There is of course the literal streetcar that Blanche takes in New Orleans to get to her sister's place. Williams, however, had metaphor in mind when he called the streetcar the “ideal metaphor for the human condition.” Desire is the controlling force that propels the main characters towards the tragic destination. Blanche’s journey on Desire through Cemeteries to Elysian Fields is both literal and allegorical in nature. Like the trolley the desire and passion eventually gets to the end of the line.
