The first visual impression we are given of Stella comes in the first scene. It is not explicit, but we do immediately envision a young woman in her twenties, who appears to be well mannered and well dressed. This is evident in William's use of the word "gentle".
[Stella comes out on the first floor landing, a gentle young woman, about twenty-five, and of a background obviously quite different from her husband's.]
