Why does Blanche feel the need to lie and say Mitch came back with flowers begging for forgiveness?

Blanche wishes that everyone see her as desirable and beautiful.... that all the men love her. She would never admit that Mitch walked away without returning..... in fact, she may actually have believed her own lie. With Blanche it's hard to tell.
