A Study in Scarlet

Watson's Pay

I am beginning this novel next week to teach Logic and Reasoning. Does anyone know how much 11 shillings and a sixpence amounted to in US dollars? What about the equivalent in today's money? Many thanks!

It took twelve pence to make a shilling, and twenty shillings made a pound. A pound was worth $11.00 during most of the 19th Century....... so I think that means you have a little over a half-pound with your 11 shillings and a six pence. So around $6 ?

The Victorian Website also mentions a book by Dale H. Porter. It says the bool contains information about wages and cites that one pound during the Victorian Era might buy $100 today. You listed what came out to be a little over half a pound, so I guess we'd be looking at a sum just over $50.
