How does Tariq's experience of the war affect him?

Tariq has suffered both emotional and physical trauma. He isn't the same person, and by the end of the story, he has no interest in marriage..... in fact, he isn't even comfortable alone with Laila. I believe the war has left him either unable to love..... or possibly afraid to love.
