The character, namely Mariam and Laila, show great resilience n their lives with Rasheed, as they are both his wives. Laila's circumstances were dire before her marriage, and a loveless marriage made things even worse. Mariam was well educated but uable to continue her education (she need to be married) and unable to put her education to use (until the birth of Aziza), whereas, Laila's family emphasizes education. Mariam married for necessity and bore the shame of not providing her husband with sons..... or even children. Laila falls in love, only to find out the love of her life is dead and she's pregnant with his child...... thus, she too marries Rasheed out of necessity. Together, these women forge a bond we don't often see. They support each other, love a child not born of their husband, and become close friends. Together, they face things that might otherwise have broken them..... they were resilient together.
