Mariam and Laila ask a young man for help when they are trying to leave Kabul. Why does he betray them to the soldiers?

I think this has to do with the reign of the Taliban. The man betrays the women because the Taliban feel that women have no rights, not even the right to flee persecution from an abusive relationship. The man must have reflected this belief.
