The women in this novel are constantly faced with oppression made evident by a detailed description of having their hopes and dreams crushed over and over again. Women also suffer by being made to feel ashamed, such as when Nana is cast out of the house for being pregnant with his illegitimate child. Women who are unable to bear children seem to suffer the most, as being infertile significantly decreases their "value".
