What does Herat signify to Mariam ?

Mariam, a young girl, lives in a small shack with her mother, Nana, outside of the city of Herat in Afghanistan. Herat comes to symbolize the marginalization of women. It symbolizes the love and lost live of her father and the misogyny of men in Islamic culture.
