The title of the novel is taken from a line from a seventeenth-century poem called “Kabul,” written by the Persian poet Saib-e-Tabrizi. This poem is partly ironic. The beauty of the suns and moons are ironic when contrasted with the violence that Afghanistan is under. There is also the theme of a woman's strength,"splendid suns", in society: yet women like Laila are subjugated by men.
