How does the old man change the lives of Pelayo and Elisenda?

Both Pelayo and Elisenda use and exploit the old man for financial gain. Initially, the old man is an annoyance. He however makes them money and changes their lives (financially) for the better. His arrival also seems to help their son recover from his fever.
