What is the context of "a very old man with enormous wings"?

Garcia Marquez is normally pretty vague when it comes to his settings. Other than a brief reference to aIrplanes, there is not much in the way of context clues to help determine a setting, other than somewhere in the mid twentieth century. This helps add to the effect of his use of magical realism.
