The townspeople came out of curiosity. Some came to look at the stranger and some came to mock the stranger. The town priest came to verify the stranger as an angel. The angel did not match the clean baby cherubs of Catholic paintings so he rejects the Old Man as a freak of nature or the stranger having something to do with the Devil.
