What the role of poverty in this story? Who is poor? How does being poor change their role?

Pelayo and Elisenda’s newfound prosperity is a result of the old man.Poverty is always at their door with lack of food and swarms of crabs at their door. Their young son is gravely ill and they have no money to treat him. The Old man and his "magic" brings them out of poverty.
