Eddie is likely thinking about the fact that Catherine is asseting her independence, and as a result, he is losing his grasp..... his control. While the audience (and Beatrice) have come to understand that Eddie's feelings for Catherine are of a romantic nature, he is still convinced that he is acting paternally.
