They, in fact, were not as much a part of the "enlightment" as were the men. They were not considered to be great thinkers, nor were they considered to be as morally or intellectually great. The idea of the Enlightenment period was not that people had an enlightenment, whether men or women; if there was enlightenment, it was an inward reaction to the situation in which they found themselves.
