What is the purpose of dreams, altered perceptions of reality, and visions in otherwise realist fiction?

How do these elements affect the realism?

Stories I am asking about in particular are "The Yellow Wallpaper", "The White Heron", and "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", NOT just "The White Heron". A general answer would be good too.
