How was the Creighton family changing in Chapter 3?

In Chapter Three, Jethro notices that talk of the war ending quickly has disappeared. Bill attends rallies and takes Jethro along. Tom and EB vow they'll go to war as soon possible, and Shad and John plan to join the war by mid-winter.
