Semantic noise is defined as barrier that is generated within a message, and is caused by limited vocabulary, cultural differences, and blocked categories. Sojourner Truth is pointing to the male ministers in the room and refuting their points.

Possible barriers to communication include racism and the fact that Truth is a woman. She directs her comments at the ministers in order to turn things around... to provoke thought and reflection.
