ALAS, BABYLON chapter2
Helen is described as a capable woman used to tending to her family despite her husband's long absences. Other female characters like Lib McGovern, and Alice Cooksey are also described as brave and intelligent. Peyton, the 11 year old daughter of Helen Bragg, doesn't want to be seen as the, “Only a girl, fit for sewing, sweeping, pot washing, and making beds” . At one point she breaks out on an expedition on her own to find food for the family.
