What happened at the shootout? What happened to Malachi?

The men on the bridge approached the car as it got closer. One man had a bat and proceeded to smash the car door. The men tried to force Malachi out of the car, and when the man with the bat touched the door handle, Malachi lurched out after him. Randy shot one of the gunners, Malachi was hit by a bullet just under his solar-plexus. The shot killed him.
