What is ironic about the final question and answer of Chapter 13 in Alas Babylon. The question being, "In what ways is their 'success' due to their own initiative"?

Ironically, nuclear war, on a global scale, defeats its own purpose. Nobody wins if there is an apocalypse. Paul exclaims that the Americans won and then adds, "not that it matters."
