What picture will Randy always retain? What had happened?

Randy will always carry the picture of the first (and last) deer he shot. It hadn't died right away, and Randy watched as it twitched. His father finally put it out of its misery by shooting it once again with his pistol.

A long time ago-he could not have been more than fourteen or fifteen-he remembered hunting deer with his father, and shooting his first deer with buckshot from the double-twenty.
