Why does Helen keep hope Mark is alive?

Helen left her husband behind in Omaha when he demanded she do so. Even though it was the right decision, a decision that kept Helen and her son safe, she continues to hope that he is alive..... a very natural wish, and a wish that is likely accompanied by survivor's guilt.
