Peyton spent his time at Fort Repose hunting, fishing, and studying. During the two years he spent there.... he didn't participate in any battles or small skirmishes. It was a place of repose... or a place of tranquility.

In two years, except during one relief expedition overland to New Smyrna, he fought no battles or skirmishes. But he shot game and caught fish for the garrison pot, and studied botany and the culture of citrus. The balmy weather and idyllic life, described in a log now in a teak chest in Randy Braggs office, inspired the Lieutenant to name his outpost Fort Repose.
