The story is far more complex in dealing with the notion of racism because it is not a construct that can be easily simplified. Racism takes form in several ways that it could pass for many as just indifference because it has been defined as overt racial acts. However, the novel highlights that the current dynamic of ignoring the bigotry of the oppressors in the system is a form of racism itself. In nurturing racial equality in all domains silence does a disservice to the course. Accordingly, Jill addresses that their response to the problem plays a huge role in either fostering or resolving the issue.
