In fitting with the play as tragedy - the end is devastating as all the Keller delusions are laid bare - the beginning seems full of promise. Chris has invited Ann over with the intention of proposing. While Mother continues to insist that Larry is alive - her inability to let it go makes her sort of the soothsayer, the one who senses that there is an ugly truth yet to be revealed - the family operates in a way that has promise for the future. The play will continue along this path as the truth comes out, and this serenity is ultimately replaced by tragedy.
