The relationship between Joe and Kate is based on lies and endures because Kate naively accepts her husband because it is her duty to support him. Kate understands her husband's dishonesty and is well ware that her husband's actions have thrust unfair consequences on others, and yet she turns a blind eye refusing to acknowledge his responsibility. She attempts to have faith in her husband and tries to justify his decisions; she also keeps his secrets. Unfortunately, her blind faith also leaves her believing that her son Larry will come home someday. The fact that Joe allows her believe her son is still alive only cements our knowledge that their marriage sits on a ledge of deceit.
On the other hand....... Frank and Lydia are oblivious. They dabble in horoscopes, raise their children, and enjoy the duties of homeownership. They seem to be happy; Frank seems a bit henpecked, but on the whole........ their lives are a picnic compared with their neighbors. Let's not forget that Lydia also plays the curious neighbor (a little nosey).

I'm sorry, I didn't catch that you had asked about the relationship between Jim and Sue rather than Joe and Kate. Jim was once an idealistic, young doctor. He is frustrated with his profession and feels as if he has to compromise his own values in order to support his very materialistic wife.
Sue, on the other hand, is a cynic. She isn't fazed by Joe's crime (because it was a money maker) and despises Chris' idealism (much like she despises her husband's). Unlike Lydia, Sue focuses on material possessions and social acceptance. Their marriage is not a happy one.
