Uncovering motives is an essential skill one needs, especially when one is dealing with someone who might be treacherous. It is easy to deal with people who have pure motives because one does not need to know what someone does something nice for you, for example. However, if you have someone untrustworthy, you cannot take them at face value. For example, a student might give a teacher a lovely Christmas present. If the child has straight As, then the gift simply is what it is. However, if the child is nearly failing, the gift might be a way of trying to "bribe" the teacher to not fail the student.
