Does Kate's loving nature benefit the family or rather hurt their sentiments?

Kate is loving but she is also obsessive even delusional to keep things "good". She buries or justifies her husband's involvement in the crime and insists Larry, now long dead, will return from the war someday.This, in the end , hurts the family by avoiding certain truths and dealing with them.
