Indeed compromise is essential to life, without it perpetual conflict is inevitable. In terms of the story this whole family must compromise with loss and the truth. Kate must compromise with the fact that her son Larry is never coming back and that Anne must continue on in life. Joe Keller must compromise by taking responsibility for his actions regarding the airplane parts. By not doing this, he eventually is driven to kill himself.
