Why does Chris call his father "Joe McGuts"?

Chris calls him “Joe McGuts” in admiration. Whenever Joe talks about his exoneration in court, Chris rewards his father with this moniker. It is Chris's way of rewarding loyalty which was ingrained into him in the army.
