According to Remarque's narrative, what was life like in the trenches?

Life was hell in the trenches. There were long hours sitting and waiting in the filth of the trenches. Rats overran them and there was little to eat. They were surrounded by corpses and decay. Many men were sick with Dysentery and other sickness. The only saving grace was the camaraderie they had with each other.
